Hall of Fame weekend is a celebration of a sport that has captivated millions of people. But is boxing still a worldwide draw like it once was?
“I think we’re in a good position," said Timothy Bradley Jr.
Bradley Jr. headlines this year's hall of fame class. The former world champion was at the top of boxing throughout his career and believes the fighters there now make the sport exciting.
“We’ve seen more undisputed champions than we have in all the recent years I’ve been in boxing, I’ve been in boxing almost 30 years," he said. "You’re seeing a ton of guys and females unifying all the titles.”
An undisputed champion is when a fighter holds the world title in all four major organizations at once. There have been 16 undisputed champions since the four belt era started in 2007. Ten of them have been crowned since 2021. But one legend disagrees with Bradley Jr.
“To be honest, boxing nowadays is not good," said Roberto Duran.
Duran was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007. In his career, he won 103 fights and 70 by knockout. He believes boxing needs to create more excitement and doesn’t have the same buzz MMA generates.
“It’s a tough sport but people like to see that and they like to see blood. They like to see that they’re punching each other, going hard, and that’s something that is missing in boxing. It's the excitement that is bringing people into watching the sport," he said through a translator.
Celebrity boxing has taken the sport by storm in recent years. According to Sporticos, Jake Paul and KSI headlined two of the three most successful boxing pay-per-views of 2023 by PPV buys. The buzz it creates can only help.
“He doesn’t see it like bad," said Duran. "It’s a good thing because it's helping to promote boxing."
Excitement keeps fans interested and that’s done by putting together thrilling fights.
“You’re gonna have to make those matchups happen, right?" said professional boxer Bryce Mills. "Because if you’re just putting one sided matchups non-stop, no ones going to pay attention to the sport.”
It's an iconic sport at a crossroads.
