Mark Vientos uses just a few words to describe his love of baseball.

“Baseball’s fun," Vientos said. "I enjoy the game. I try to enjoy the game with my teammates [and] have as much fun as possible on the field.”

And you can just see it. The smile never leaves his face. As one of the top prospects in the New York Mets organization, he knows he’s one call away from the bigs.

“It’s a dream come true," he said. "It’s a blessing to say I’m that close. All my hard work is playing off, but like I said, sitting back, thinking about the hard work, early mornings, late nights is starting to pay off is really promising, and I’m happy for it.”

Vientos has impressed the team and fans alike. His power shines at the plate, evident as he's the team leader in home runs so far this season, and one of the biggest reasons Syracuse has turned things around in the Triple-A International League.

“What can I do to help us score runs," Vientos said. "If it’s me leading off with a walk or driving a run in, that’s the mindset."

But Vientos added another wrinkle to his game, learning from one of the best in Mets ace pitcher Jacob deGrom these last few weeks.

“His demeanor," Vientos said. "The way he carries himself. He’s strict with his routine. Honestly, guys like that, you just have to sit back and watch.”

Until he gets the call to the majors, Vientos, closing in on his 23rd birthday, says he's focused on one thing in Syracuse.

“We’re going to keep winning games," he said. "I’m excited. It’s a great group of guys we have around. It’s fun to learn and be around these guys for sure.”
