EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Despite a fourth-quarter charge, Cornell's lacrosse team couldn't close the gap in the NCAA national championship game Monday, as Maryland capped off a perfect season with a 9-7 win.
The Big Red trailed 9-3 heading into the fourth before getting goals from Michael Long, Hugh Kelleher, Spencer Wirtheim and John Piatelli, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Terrapins' early barrage that had given them as much as a seven-goal lead at one point.
C.J. Kirst scored two goals for Cornell (14-5), which had 24 shots on goal to Maryland's 18. Anthony Demaio scored four goals for Maryland.
Chayse Ierlan stopped nine shots for the Big Red in goal.
