It wasn't pretty in the beginning, but it was sweet in the end as the Orange rallied from down 3 at halftime to defeat 7th ranked Virginia 15-12.
In their first game in front of the home crowd, the Orange got off to a slow start against UVA. Trailing 7-3 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half, Syracuse looked to be staring at their second loss in three games. But, when the Orange needed them most, the star tandem of Megan Carney and Meaghan Tyrrell rallied the team in the second half.
Carney began the comeback for the Orange, as she scored the final goal of the first half before tallying three more in the second half to finish with four on the day. Tyrell's offensive explosion wasn't far behind, as she scored two of the Orange first four goals after the halftime break. She would go on to tie her career high with five goals in the game as SU found a way to get behind the Virginia defense.
Speaking of getting behind the defense in the second half, Syracuse closed out the contest scoring six of the game’s final seven goals. The six goal-run by the Orange was only halted after UVA scored their final goal of the game with just under two and a half minutes to play.
Coming into Saturday, these two teams were considered final weekend caliber teams. Saturday’s contest did nothing to change those notions. In fact, these two teams are so closely matched that coming into the contest, the series rivalry was tied six games apiece in contests held in Syracuse.
Saturday's win for the Orange gave the Orange their first 5-0 homestart since starting 6-0 during the 2017 season. Syracuse now enters a short week, where they will visit Albany on Tuesday. The meeting will commence a three game road trip for the Orange women.
