Days after the Ivy League announced its decision to cancel the 2020-21 winter sports season, Cornell senior forward Jimmy Boeheim and two of his teammates have entered the NCAA transfer portal. Stadium's Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news on Twitter Tuesday morning.
Boeheim is the Big Red's leading returning scorer, averaging 16.7 points per game last season. Last week, his younger brother, Buddy, told the local media that Jimmy is planning on finishing up his degree in A\applied economics and management at Cornell this year, graduating from one of the top six business schools in the world. Assuming that happens, the elder Boeheim would then be eligible to play at a non-Ivy school next season as a graduate transfer.
The other two Cornell players who've entered the transfer portal are senior starting guards Terrance McBride, the team's second-leading returning scorer who averaged 12.7 points last season, and Bryan Knapp, who chipped in 7.1 points per game. McBride also tied for the team lead in assists, and Knapp was one of Cornell's most accurate three-point shooters.
The trio is expected to graduate with their Cornell degrees before moving on, according to a team spokesman, and have the option of doing so mid-year or waiting until the start of next season. It's unlikely the NCAA would grant any mid-year transfer player a waiver to play immediately, so chances are, all will wait.
There has been speculation that Jimmy Boeheim may decide to transfer to Syracuse to play his final season for his dad and alongside his brother, Buddy, who will be a senior next season. Jimmy and Buddy played one year together at Jamesville-Dewitt High School back in 2015-16.
