Firefighters put out a large brush fire in Syracuse on Wednesday night that burned approximately 4-5 acres near the Syracuse zoo with black smoke seen for miles.
The fire burned in a wide area between Grand Avenue and Velasko Road; it was contained before it could cause any property damage.
The Syracuse Fire Department said crews responded to the fire around 7 p.m. Wednesday, finding what they called "a large wildfire, rapidly spreading in the retention basin." Flames aided by dry conditions, the SFD said, rose as high as 30 feet and windy conditions blew embers hundreds of feet across the area, briefly igniting a tree on Grand Avenue near the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
The fire department said it extinguished the fire within two hours, with the help of multiple crews from police departments, EMTs and National Grid. No one was injured.
The fire's cause is still under investigation.
