The city Of Syracuse's deer management program is now underway.

New this year is a pilot program for some east side residents where deer overpopulation continues.

It's called “trap and euthanize” and it's where deer enter box traps that are monitored remotely before being killed.

This method makes it easier to get deer that are closer to homes.

"They used what's called an active bolt method to euthanize the deer, which is something that is used in the livestock industry," said Courtney LaMere, a wildlife biologist with the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation. "There's no projectile so there's no gun so it allows them to be close to homes. It allows them to access deers close to homes that they haven't been able to access before."

Deer management continues through March.
