This week marks Rail Safety Week in the U.S., and Operation Lifesaver Inc. is working to promote safe behavior around train tracks.

In addition, CSX special agents are enforcing railroad crossing and trespassing laws across the state. They will be positioned at targeted railroad crossings.

Agents will be handing out safety cards to drivers and pedestrians, and issuing warnings and citations to anyone who violates the law.

Operation Lifesaver says 2,100 people in North America are killed or seriously injured every year due to unsafe behavior around railroad tracks and trains.

“Our goal is to get to zero incidents – zero fatalities and zero injuries. The driving force for this organization is saving lives,” said Rachel Maleh, executive director of Operation Lifesaver Inc., during a previous campaign.

Operation Lifesaver was founded in 1972 when it says the average number of collisions at U.S. highway-rail grade crossings had climbed above 12,000 incidents a year. At that time, there was one every 45 minutes. The organization says its educational programs have helped reduce collisions by more than 80%.
