The deadline to apply for the New York State Police trooper exam is quickly approaching. Those interested have until Monday.
Last summer, state police had a goal of hiring 1,000 people over the next year. In December, the agency said it had the highest candidate processing turnout in more than a decade, but that was an ending point.
If someone is interested in taking the exam, they better get to it. A candidate must first apply to take and pass a trooper entrance examination. It involves a computer-based exam that's available at 60 locations in New York state, 390 locations throughout the country and 101 locations outside of the United States.
What is on the entrance exam?
- Cognitive ability measuring
- Memorization
- Vocabulary, grammar, patterns and ordering
- Multiple choice questions
Following the entrance examination, an eligibility list is established, and eligible candidates are invited to attend a processing weekend where there's a physical exam. That involves many things you would expect like sit-ups, push-ups and running.
The full examination takes place in the following order:
- Entrance Examination
- Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Psychological Evaluation
- Background Investigation and Polygraph Test
- Medical Examination
