A Syracuse man is accused of using pepper spray on police during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

The U.S. Justice Department said Aaron Donald Sauer, 43, has been charged with the felonies of civil disorder, knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct in any restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. 

Sauer also faces several misdemeanor offenses.

The DOJ said he allegedly destroyed part of a fence on the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol.

Sauer will make his initial appearance in the Northern District of New York.
