In the U.S., 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and or assault in their lifetime. That’s according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.
Norm Mandarino started training in kung fu in his 20s.
"I thought at the time I was very, very late and started seeing younger kids and, you know, teenagers of that nature. And then now I'm 81 years old, so it's two-thirds of my life," said Mandarino, owner and head instructor at Mandarino Kung Fu.
He says kung fu and other martial arts were war arts. People defended themselves before they had weapons, so they used empty hands and farm tools and things like that.
"Right now, I think most people train at least kung fu in our school for physical fitness, mental development and self-defense if you need it. However, in our school, we rely on self-defense for our training. All the movements are self-defense-oriented. They're blocking, punching or kicking," he said.
In early October, Mandarino Kung Fu held a free women’s self-defense class.
"There's a lot of things going on in the world and in the country right now that aren't as safe as they used to be," said Mandarino. "So we're trying to reach out to the community to do what we can to help them."
