The fathers of the two teens shot and killed by an Onondaga County Sheriff's Office deputy following a car theft and burglary incident say their sons were listening to outside influences and friends instead of their parents.

Killed in the DeWitt shooting were Dhal Pothwi Apet, 17, and Lueth Mo, 15, both of Syracuse, after the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says they attempted to run the deputy over following two burglary incidents at smokeshops in Central New York Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Officials identified the deputy who shot the two teenagers as Deputy John Rosello. He has been with the Onondaga County Sheriff's office for seven years and was honored with the medal of meritorious service in 2019.

Both fathers spoke with Spectrum News 1 on Friday.

Pothwei Bangoshoth, Apet's father, said he quit his full-time job at Henninger High School the day before Dhal died because he knew he needed to spend more time to focus on his 11 children.

Domkog Mo, father of Lueth Mo, said Lueth loved games and basketball. Lueth is one of Domkog’s seven children. The families are from Sudan.

Their services will be handled by Farrone & Sons funeral home.

The fathers are seeking the advice of legal counsel.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office is still looking for four remaining suspects involved in the two car thefts and burglaries that led up to the shooting.
