Destiny USA officials are taking new measures they say is to help police prevent crime inside the Syracuse mall.

Every vehicular entrance to the mall is now equipped with Flock Safety license plate cameras. The cameras provide law enforcement with real time alerts if a wanted or stolen vehicle comes on to the property, mall officials said.

Destiny officials said the system won't take photos of occupants, but can help authorities track someone who has committed a crime inside by focusing on license plates.

  • Destiny USA also expanded enforcement of a parental escort policy for people younger than 18

Pyramid CEO Steve Congel said Destiny incidents have decreased in the last 12 to 24 months despite a few incidents that were highly publicized. Still, officials are confident the cameras will help fight crime even more.

"This is not a Destiny issue. It's not a city of Syracuse issue. It's really a national issue that people have this heightened level of concern about security. And we thought it was really important to introduce all that we're doing here to the community," said Congel.

"The few incidents we have, we understand it's a concern for people, but that's going to help to reduce those incidents even more. Because when people hopefully know their vehicle is being scanned when they're on the property, they're going to think twice if they decide to commit any crime on the property," said Syracuse Police Lt. Matthew Malinowski.

Officials said the Flock license plate reading cameras are being in about 3,700 communities nationwide. They said communities that have implemented Flock Safety cameras have reported crime reductions of up to 70 percent. The cameras are also used at Pyramid's Walden Galleria property in Buffalo.

Destiny USA recently made a few other safety enhancements. One includes expanded enforcement of a parental escort policy. Anyone younger than 18 years old must be always accompanied by an adult. Other improvements include more Syracuse police officers on site who are constantly always monitoring the mall.

Destiny also has a community engagement staff known as UnBeylievable Enterprises that meets on site with at-risk youth visiting the mall.
