New York State Police were out in full force this past Super Bowl Weekend as part of their STOP DWI traffic enforcement period.

During a campaign that ran from Friday, Feb. 10 to Monday, Feb 13, New York State Police arrested 183 people for DWI, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday.

"I thank our State Police and local law enforcement for their diligent efforts to get dangerous drivers off of the roads," Hochul said in a statement. "The poor decisions made by impaired and reckless drivers put everyone on the road at risk. Enforcements like these send the message that we will not tolerate this behavior on our roadways."

State Police also issued 11,865 tickets and investigated 490 crashes. This included 73 crash-related injuries and four fatalities. Of the tickets issued, 4,119 were for speeding, 267 for distracted driving, 356 for seatbelt violations and 86 as part of the state's Move Over law.

The governor’s office says State Police increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest drivers suspected of being under the influence.

"We will continue to do all that we can to get the message out that impaired driving is completely preventable,” New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder said in a statement. “All it takes is making the choice to have a plan to be responsible and ensure that everyone can celebrate and still get home safe."
