The suspect shot in last week's officer-involved shooting on Syracuse's south side is now facing weapon charges.

According to Syracuse Police, officers were called to the 100 block of Mark Avenue around 5:11 a.m. last Thursday for a shots fired call.

When the officer, Ryan McGovern, arrived, he found a man armed with a gun. McGovern fired his weapon, striking the suspect one time in the jaw area, Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said.

A handgun that police believe belongs to the suspect was found at the scene, Buckner said.

The suspect was identified as Jakelle Davis, 23, of Syracuse.

Davis has recovered from the wound and is now being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center. He's facing several weapons possession counts, as well as menacing a police officer.

McGovern was not injured in the incident. Per department policy in these situations, he has been placed on administrative leave. He was hired in 2018 and serves in the patrol division.

The shooting remains under investigation, though it comes as police brutality protests continued in Syracuse.

"Last Chance for Change" marchers made a stop at the Justice Center downtown, with some protestors shouting out the name of Jakelle Davis.

They're also helping neighborhoods along the way, by cleaning up on the west side.

They plan to be on the east side for the same reason on Wednesday.
