A difficult day for many in the Central Square School District with news that the Hastings-Mallory Elementary School principal died.

Students, parents and the community gathered at the school to mourn Lawrence Wink’s death Monday night.

He was the principal for the past 11 years. He was also the board president for Exceptional Family Resources, an organization that works with individuals with disabilities.

Wink was a big fan of Syracuse University and Dallas Cowboys football, and he loved spending time with family

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says the 48-year-old was hit by Syracuse Haulers Waste Removal Inc. truck Monday morning in Baldwinsville.

The driver was backing down Aspen Springs Drive when he hit Wink as he was crossing the road. Officials say the accident is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, loved ones are mourning Wink's tragic death and remembering the impact he made throughout the community.

"He left a legacy of kindness, energy and advocacy for all students," said Central Square School District Superintendent. "Students and staff alike loved Larry. He was a leader in the community and in the district. He truly loved his job. He will be greatly missed."

There will be more counseling available for students and faculty Tuesday.

Calling hours are from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Falardeau Funeral Home in Baldwinsville.
