New York U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has lost her bid to be the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee in the next Congress following a caucus vote that picked Virginia Rep. Jerry Connolly as ranking member instead.
Currently second in line to the ranking member, Ocasio-Cortez made a play for the position since Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, the current ranking member, is seeking to be the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee after New York Rep. Jerry Nadler said earlier this month he would not seek another term in that spot.
She called the responsibility of leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during Donald Trump’s second term in the White House "a profound and consequential one."
"Tried my best. Sorry I couldn't pull through everyone - we live to fight another day," the congresswoman wrote on the social media platform Bluesky.
Ocasio-Cortez has been on the Oversight Committee since joining Congress in 2019, which was chaired for several years by another New Yorker, former Rep. Carolyn Maloney, while Democrats held the majority in the chamber.
The Steering Committee recommended Connolly for the position. He had unsuccessfully run for the Oversight Committee role twice before.
“I think my colleagues were measuring their votes by who’s got experience, who is seasoned, who can be trusted, who’s capable and who’s got a record of productivity and I think that prevailed,” Connolly told reporters after the vote.
The current chairman of the committee is Kentucky Republican Rep. James Comer.
