U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler, of New York, is now fighting to remain the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee after Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin said Monday he also wants the job.

There will be a vote of the committee by Democrats at some point to decide whether Nadler will keep his position.

Some Democrats have been quietly pushing for the Manhattan lawmaker, who is 77, to step down as ranking member.

The House Judiciary Committee is expected to play a key role in the next Congress. The committee will be chaired by Republican Jim Jordan, a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump.

Raskin currently serves as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
