Retired state Sen. Tarky Lombardi, from the Syracuse area, has died.

The Jamesville resident passed away Sunday at his home from kidney complications, according to his obituary.

Lombardi served on the Syracuse Common Council before being elected to the state Senate in 1965. He would hold the seat for 27 years until retiring in 1992.

He's known for being a big fan of Syracuse University athletics and helped secure state funding for the construction of the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse head football coach Fran Brown earlier this year honored Lombardi for being a long-time season ticket holder.

Lombardi championed legislation on medical malpractice reform and reshaping nursing homes.

He served as chair of the Senate Health Committee and the Finance Committee.

Lombardi was 95.
