As lawmakers get back to work in Washington, there are a couple of issues that are front and center for elected officials in the Hudson Valley and Long Island.

The first is congestion pricing, which Gov. Kathy Hochul has reembraced, and President-elect Donald Trump has again panned.

The second is the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, also known as SALT, which has hit some suburban homeowners hard.

House Republicans from swing districts in New York have spent the last year trying to convince their colleagues from more conservative states to increase the deduction, but to no avail.

One Republican who has introduced legislation to raise the cap on joint filers, and who has made no secret of his anger over congestion pricing, is U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler who just won a race to retain his seat in New York's 17th Congressional District in the lower Hudson Valley. He spoke with Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter.
