President-elect Donald Trump named one of his campaign chairs, Susie Wiles, to be his next White House chief of staff.
Wiles has a long history as a Republican operative and aide, working on presidential campaigns dating back to Ronald Reagan in 1980.
While longtime Florida-based, Wiles also worked in the Washington office for the late former U.S. Rep. Jack Kemp, of New York, back in the 1970s.
Kemp was a powerful political player at one time, representing parts of western New York in the House of Representatives from 1971 to 1989, including a time as chair of the House Republican conference. He then served as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President George H.W. Bush.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for president in 1988 and was also the party’s vice presidential nominee alongside Bob Dole in 1996.
Nearly 50 years after working for Kemp, Wiles will now be the first woman chief of staff.
