  • New York Magazine said Monday it has parted ways with Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi

  • In September, Nuzzi was put on leave after admitting to having a personal relationship with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

  • The law firm Davis Wright Tremaine reviewed Nuzzi’s reporting on the 2024 presidential campaign, the magazine said in a statement, and “reached the same conclusion as the magazine’s initial internal review of her published work, finding no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. Nevertheless, the magazine and Nuzzi agreed that the best course forward is to part ways”

  • Nuzzi’s personal relationship with Kennedy did not begin until after her 2023 profile of the former candidate had been published last November

An outside law firm reviewed Nuzzi’s reporting on the 2024 presidential campaign, the magazine said in a statement.

“They reached the same conclusion as the magazine’s initial internal review of her published work, finding no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. Nevertheless, the magazine and Nuzzi agreed that the best course forward is to part ways.”

Nuzzi acknowledged the relationship to her editors and confirmed with Status media reporter Oliver Darcy last month that her relationship with Kennedy had “turned personal” earlier this year.

“During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source,” Nuzzi told Darcy. “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.

According to Status, Nuzzi’s personal relationship with Kennedy did not begin until after her 2023 profile of the former candidate had been published last November.

Kennedy has been married to actress Cheryl Hines since 2014. In August, he suspended his presidential campaign to back Trump and sought — to mixed success — to have his name removed from ballots in swing states to support the Republican nominee.

Last month, the magazine said Nuzzi’s personal relationship with a former subject of her reporting on the 2024 campaign was a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures.

Nuzzi first rose to prominence as an intern for Anthony Weiner’s New York City mayoral campaign, writing an editorial for the New York Daily News about her experience. She was hired by The Daily Beast and received accolades for her reporting from outlets like Politico before joining New York Magazine.

She was the subject of controversy in 2018 when she admitted to entering the home office of former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski without permission.

Her most recent profile for New York Magazine was an examination of former President Donald Trump's ear following the assassination attempt in July.

Nuzzi is “a uniquely talented writer” who has worked with New York Magazine for almost eight years as a Washington correspondent, according to the statement. “We wish her the best.”
