The deputy mayor of Syracuse is running for the city's top office.

Democratic Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens formally announced her run Monday, according to her campaign. This comes about a month after Owens first announced she was setting up an exploratory committee.

Owens said her time being second in command to incumbent Mayor Ben Walsh — who can not run again next year due to term limits — has prepared her for the role. She said she sees big changes coming with Micron investments and the new I-81 plan.

It also comes just days after Jimmy Oliver, a fellow Democrat, filed papers with the state board of elections to run as well. Oliver is the community engagement director for the Syracuse Police Department.
