Post-presidential debate chatter and all the political comments can lead to political fatigue, according to the Pew Research Center.

Some people might want to just throw in the towel before Election Day and check out with all the verbal sparring.

Local experts at the CNY Political Leadership Institute say, though, not to walk away yet. Their challenge is to double down on your political involvement.

What You Need To Know

  • Fifty-nine percent of Americans are limiting their political intake, according to an AP/NORC poll

  • Political experts say rather than watching from the sidelines, get involved on the local level

  • CNY Political Leadership Institute educates those who want to know more about the political process

The media, social media and even close friends can make you just sick of hearing about politics. But experts say take the control back and don’t be an armchair quarterback, or a bi-annual enthusiast in politics: Take part every day.

There are big and small ways you can feel like you’re off the sidelines and impacting the results, they say. The CNY Political Leadership Institute helps to educate people about the political process or even get anyone started on a campaign, regardless of party.

“They need to educate themselves on exactly what the facts are. It is one of the reasons why we started the CNY Political Leadership Institute," says Michele Diecuch, the institute's executive director. "So it just talks about the facts. And just helps people understand that politics really is local. You have to get involved locally, and that’s how you can really have the biggest impact.”

“The great thing is, totally nonpartisan. We don’t talk about issues, local or national. So it’s kind of a safe space for folks to come to learn about the process, learn about what is going on," added institute Co-Chair David Knapp, "without getting bombarded by one side or the other."

Institute officials recommend starting as soon as possible, even if you only have an hour or two per week to help out. You can stuff envelopes, drop off signs. Or if you’ve been thinking about it, plan a campaign.
