About 23,000 people took part in the first weekend of early voting for federal and state primary elections in New York, according to state Board of Elections numbers.

As of Monday morning, 23,427 residents voted early on Saturday and Sunday.

Nearly half of those — 10,667 — came from New York City voters. About 12,760 came from voters in the other parts of the state.

In upstate's more populous counties, 187 people voted early in Erie County, 383 voted early in Monroe County, 957 voted early in Albany County and 882 voted early in Onondaga County.

Eligible voters in New York can participate in early voting through Sunday, June 23. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 25.

Early voting first came into practice in New York in 2019.
