Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein will not appear on the ballot in New York state in the general election in November, the state Board of Elections determined Thursday.

Commissioners of the board held a hearing to rule on all the petitions submitted by independent and third party candidates for president.

For a candidate to appear on the ballot that does not have the backing of one of the parties with automatic ballot access, a candidate must submit 45,000 signatures or 1% of the total number of votes in the prior gubernatorial election, whichever is less. The Board of Elections counted 34,104 signatures from Stein’s campaign. They also said she failed to submit an elector list.

Other third party candidates were rejected. Appearing on the ballot this fall will be Democratic President Joe Biden, Republican Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Stein, of Massachusetts, was the Green Party’s presidential candidate in 2012 and 2016. She was nominated once again in Troy, where the party had its nominating convention in May.

Changes were made by the state in 2020 that have made it increasingly difficult for many third party presidential candidates to appear on the ballot in New York, limiting the prospect of alternatives.
