New York state Sen. Neil Breslin, the current most tenured member of the Legislature's upper chamber, won't run for reelection this year, state Assemblyman John McDonald told Spectrum News 1 Wednesday evening.

The Democrat has represented parts of the Capital Region for more than 25 years, currently holding the Senate's 46th District, which consists of parts of Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties.

First elected in 1996, Breslin currently serves as chair of the Committees on Ethics and Internal Governance and Insurance and also co-chair of the Legislative Ethics Commission.

Other than the Legislature, Breslin has also served as president of Arbor House, an attorney for St. Anne's Institute in Albany and vice president of the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, among several other public service roles.

One potential candidate to succeed him is Albany-area state Assemblywoman Pat Fahy. If she chooses to run, it could lead to a crowded Democratic primary for her Assembly seat.
