New York state Assemblymember Marjorie Byrnes won’t run for reelection later this year, the Republican lawmaker announced Tuesday, concluding three terms in the state Legislature.
“The people that I represent, our constituents, they’re friends,” she said. “But what it comes down to is the Assembly calendar requires you to be in Albany extensively from January until June. And at this point in our lives, it’s just time to spend more time with family.”
Byrnes was elected in 2018 to the 133rd Assembly District, which includes Livingston County and parts of Monroe, Ontario, Steuben and Wyoming counties. Prior to that, she served as Rochester City Court judge and Caledonia village trustee.
Byrnes also had Livingston County Clerk Andrea Bailey at her side, who Byrnes said is running to succeed her in the Assembly and offered her endorsement.
The 133rd District is a Republican-leaning district. All seats in the state Assembly and Senate are up for reelection this year.
Byrnes will remain in the Legislature through the end of the year. The 2024 legislative session begins Wednesday in Albany.
