Republican U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro joined four other Republicans in New York’s congressional delegation in voting against Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives during his third ballot for the gavel on Friday.

Molinaro, who represents New York's 19th Congressional District, had voted for Jordan on the first two ballots, but told reporters prior to the Friday vote it was not his intention to vote for Jordan again. He cast a ballot for former Rep. Lee Zeldin on the most recent ballot. Zeldin served in a Long Island congressional seat for eight years before running unsuccessfully for governor in 2022.

Molinaro now joins four other New York Republicans who have opposed Jordan’s speakership bid from the start.

Rep. Nick LaLota, of New York's 1st Congressional District on Long Island, has voted each time for Zeldin, who held LaLota's seat before him.

Also voting for Zeldin again was Rep. Andrew Garbarino, of the 2nd District, and Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, of the 4th District, both of which are on Long Island.

Zeldin was actually spotted on Capitol Hill on Thursday evening, Spectrum News 1 reported, and was seen going into Rep. Jordan’s office.

Rep. Mike Lawler, who represents the lower Hudson Valley in the 17th District, who previously voted for Rep. Kevin McCarthy, cast a vote instead this time for Rep. Patrick McHenry, the speaker pro-tempore. Lawler on Thursday supported empowering McHenry to serve as speaker temporarily.

Jordan’s third attempt to win the gavel ended with 194 votes, well short of what's needed. Twenty-five Republicans voted for someone other than the Ohio congressman, more so than the previous two votes. All House Democrats voted for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, also of New York.

It has now been more than two and a half weeks since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his role, leaving the chamber unable to conduct legislative business.
