Acting New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci will retire this summer and step down after more than four decades in state service, according to the department. 

Annucci has served with the department for 38 years, serving at its helm for the last decade.

His last day in office is June 9. His retirement takes effect Aug. 11.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to oversee the department for the last 10 years," Annucci said in an announcement to DOCCS staff Tuesday morning. "Every day throughout my 38-plus years in the agency, I have learned something new and have developed nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for this department and its incredible workforce. I believe that we are the best Corrections and Community Supervision agency in the country, and the men and women who work in our prisons and community supervision offices are truly unsung heroes.”

DOCCS Executive Deputy Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello III will assume operational oversight of the agency after Annucci's departure.

The DOCCS commissioner is a member of the governor's cabinet, meaning Gov. Kathy Hochul will nominate Annucci's successor. State senators will vote to reject or appoint her nominee to the position after a hearing at a later date.
