About 1.8 million New Yorkers will be receiving checks in the coming weeks from the state — just as Election Day approaches.
Eligible taxpayers for this round of checks will be people who have filed in 2021 for an Empire Child Tax Credit or a New York state earned income tax credit, the state Department of Taxation and Finance announced Wednesday.
All told, about $475 million in tax relief will land in New Yorkers’ mailboxes in the coming weeks.
"We’re delivering these relief checks to hardworking New Yorkers who’ve been feeling the pinch of inflation,” said Acting Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Amanda Hiller. “The average payment is about $270 for each recipient, which will help address rising costs associated with the pandemic and inflation.”
Earlier this year, property owners received tax relief checks that were sent weeks before the June statewide primary election.
Money for the tax relief was agreed to in the state budget approved earlier in April.
