Last month, the Supreme Court ruled in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that there is no constitutionally guaranteed right to abortion.

Sophie Nir, executive director of Eleanor’s Legacy, a political organizing group that works to elect pro-abortion rights Democratic women candidates, said the decision to overturn nearly half a century of judicial precedence is “devastating” and “nothing short of a culture war.”

President Joe Biden after the decision in Dobbs was released said that abortion rights will be on the ballot in November. Nir agrees and says the there is an “extremely real threat” of a nationwide abortion ban. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has suggested that should his party retake the House of Representatives, they would propose a nationwide ban.

Even though her group focuses on state and local races in New York, Nir said a Democratic majority is not enough in the U.S. Senate, but more pro-abortion rights activists need to be a part of that majority.

“Abortion is the fundamental tenant of women’s freedom. If you do not support a woman’s freedom, I don’t know what Democratic values you stand for,” Nir argued.
