Oswego County native and well-known Republican politician Douglas Barclay has died at the age of 88.

Barclay was born in Pulaski and got his law degree from Syracuse University.

He spent two decades in the New York state Senate before serving as President George W. Bush's ambassador to El Salvador from 2003 to 2006.

Barclay's son, William, is currently the state Assembly minority leader.

Fellow politicians, including Rep. John Katko and former Governor George Pataki, passed along their condolences Monday night, calling Barclay a lifelong public servant and great American.
