New York state Senator John Mannion is joining the list of state lawmakers calling for Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign after several sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior allegations have been made public in the last few weeks.
Mannion, a Democrat, said on Twitter Wednesday evening that the statements made by the women "are heartbreaking and I believe are the truth."
He also credited his decision to the attorney general's report that the state undercounted COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes, saying "these issues rise above the level of partisan politics or ideological fights - maintaining the public's trust in government requires those of us in elected office to hold ourselves to a higher standard of conduct. The governor has clearly failed to meet that standard."
"The ability of the governor and his aides to lead New York is compromised beyond repair," Mannion added. "It's time for them to do the right thing and step aside for the sake of all New Yorkers."
Mannion's decision came shortly after a report Wednesday evening that a female aide in Cuomo's office alleged he aggressively groped her last year while alone with him at the Executive Mansion in Albany, according to a new report in The Albany Times Union. Six women have come forward recently to make claims against the governor.
Mannion's Senate colleague, Rachel May, is the other Central New York Democrat from that chamber to have called for Cuomo to step down.
