New York Republican Party Committee Chairman Nick Langworthy and some GOP state lawmakers want to create a recall mechanism for statewide elected positions.

The announcement stems from frustrations over emergency powers granted to Governor Andrew Cuomo during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They claim the principle is similar to what happens in California, where voters can request a recall vote. Langworthy said a recall would create greater accountability in statewide offices.

"This should not be a partisan issue. It's something that every Democrat, Republican, conservative, liberal no matter what stripe you're of, you should support it because it holds people in power accountable," Langworthy said.

A recall mechanism would require an amendment to the state's constitution.
