Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and 34 states are now on New York’s quarantine list as COVID-19 cases surge across the country.

The situation across the country is in stark contrast to New York, where the infection rate lingers at around less than one percent, the lowest in the country.

To make the list, states must currently have a COVID-19 positive rate higher than 10 per 100,000 people over a seven-day rolling average.

The mandatory quarantine applies to everyone traveling to and from New York state for more than 24 hours. If someone fails to do so, New York can fine them $2,000. People entering the state must also fill out a travel form.
