Congressional candidate George Phillips believes he'll be able to overcome a fundraising gap as he looks to challenge incumbent Democrat Anthony Brindisi.

Phillips first has to face former Rep. Claudia Tenney and Franklin Sager in a Republican primary. He believes the national committee will invest a lot in the race for the eventual nominee.

Phillips feels he's the best suited to reach out to the biggest number of voters.

"In this district, we know there are Democrats who feel their jobs have been sent overseas, they feel that Washington is a mess,” Phillips said. “They were supporting Trump. We have to make sure they're staying on our ticket, because they did not for Claudia Tenney."

Tenney raised $300,000 in the final fundraising quarter of 2019, ending the reporting period with more than $286,000 in cash on hand. 

The primary election is scheduled for June 23.
