Democratic Rep. Anthony Brindisi told reporters on Tuesday it’s “too early” to discuss the impeachment of President Donald Trump and wants to review the facts before making a determination.

“I think it’s far too early to discuss impeachment,” Brindisi said. “There are investigations happening. As I’ve said, this is a very sad time for our country. We should treat this with the utmost respect and give it the attention it deserves.”

Brindisi, a former member of the state Assembly, was elected to a district that President Donald Trump easily carried in 2016 after unseating Republican incumbent Claudia Tenney last year.

Trump campaigned heavily for Tenney last year, including a fundraising stop and the deployment of his family members on her behalf.

House Democrats last week announced they would move forward with an impeachment inquiry, including lawmakers who were elected to battleground seats, like Rep. Antonio Delgado. Democrats are investigating whether Trump abused his power by asking the president of Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son’s business ties in the country.

But Brindisi, for now, has taken a cautious approach.

“We can’t pre-judge what the outcome will be,” Brindisi said. “At this point in time I’m not supporting impeachment. There are investigations happening. I want to see what the facts are and then make a determination at that point.”

Brindisi said he was focused on more localized issues, like combating the opioid crisis and veterans’ concerns.

“Right now, what I don’t want to lose sight of, is the work that the people in this region sent me to Washington to do,” he said.
