Republican state Sen. Joe Griffo, in a letter to President Joe Biden on Thursday, urged his administration to take further steps to address the Canadian wildfires this summer that have created smoked-filled skies across large swaths of the U.S., including much of New York.

The letter comes after air quality worsened in June and for several days in July due to the blazes in Canada, something health officials in New York have warned could lead to adverse outcomes for vulnerable people.

Griffo, a lawmaker from the Utica area, urged Biden to find ways of working with the Canadian government to find ways of addressing the fires.

“While I recognize that we have no control over when natural disasters may occur, I am urging your administration to continue to work bilaterally with the Canadian government to further address these wildfires,” Griffo wrote in the letter. “Simply advising people to stay indoors and to limit their time outside is not enough. Further action is needed that will finally resolve this issue, better protect the health and wellbeing of New Yorkers, Americans and Canadians and allow for recreational activities and outdoor events to take place safely this summer."

New York has provided help to Canadian officials to address the fires. In June, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced forest rangers and firefighters would be sent to Quebec to provide aid and support.
