New York's nation-leading outmigration in the last year could put the state on track to losing even more influence in the U.S. House of Representatives, an analysis by a political consulting firm found.

U.S. Census data released last month found New York had the largest decline in its population between July 2021 and July 2022, falling by 180,341 people. New York lost 299,557 people to other states in outmigration.

Following the 2020 Census, New York lost a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives where power is apportioned based on population.

The state lost two districts following the 2010 Census. New York currently has 26 seats in Congress.

The analysis by Election Data Services found if New York's population figures were used to apportion Congress in 2021, New York would have lost two seats, alongside Illinois.

New York, once the third largest state, now trails Florida in population.
