Last month, Democrat Pat Ryan won a closely watched special election for New York's 19th congressional district in the Hudson Valley.
Long considered a bellwether district, the race between Ryan and Republican Marc Molinaro was being followed to see which issues resonated most with voters ahead of the November general election after incumbent Antonio Delgado was elevated to the lieutenant governor's office. But now Ryan himself is running for a full term in a newly drawn district.
Ryan's campaign on Monday released a new TV ad as he runs for the new 18th congressional district. The new spot is partly biographical in nature as the newly minted member of Congress introduces himself to a new swath of voters.
The ad features Ryan in front of West Point on the Hudson River while also touting his support for abortion rights, gun laws and acknowledging the spiking inflation.
“Whether it’s in Congress or in combat, I know what it means to fight for freedom, American values, and the safety of our families,” Ryan says in the ad. “I’m committed to easing our economic burden, protecting a woman’s right to choose, and keeping the same violent weapons I saw in combat away from our children’s schools.”
Ryan's campaign said the ad is part of a six-figure TV and digital ad buy in the district.
His Republican opponent, meanwhile, recently racked up a business-backed endorsement. Assemblyman Colin Schmitt was endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Business, the group announced last week.
“Colin Schmitt has experience as a businessman and as a member of the New York State Assembly, he voted with small businesses 100% of the time,” said Ashley Ranslow, the NFIB New York State Director. “He knows the issues New York’s small businesses are currently facing and has pledged to focus on tax relief and regulatory reform in Washington to strengthen the small business economy. We look forward to continuing to work with him.”
