The increase in private sector employment in New York slowed in June and overall unemployment was unchanged amid rising interest rates and concerns over a potential economic recession.
The number of private-sector jobs in New York increased by 19,700 last month, according to the state Department of Labor. That's a decline from May, when the state added 27,200 jobs.
New York's statewide unemployment rate stayed the same as in May at 4.4%.
In New York City, meanwhile, the unemployment rate increased slightly from 6.1% to 6.2%. New York City has struggled to bring its jobless rate down since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when hospitality and tourism jobs were especially hard hit by the closing of public gathering spaces and businesses.
Unemployment outside of the city in New York stood at 3.1% in June, unchanged from May. Nationally, the unemployment rate is 3.6%.
