U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin's campaign for governor on Thursday was endorsed by two Long Island police unions as he runs on a platform pledging to crack down on crime in New York.
Zeldin's bid is being backed by the Nassau County Police Detectives Association and the Nassau County Police Superior Officers Association.
“We are joined here today by exceptional men and women of law enforcement from Nassau County who have selflessly dedicated their lives to make our communities safer. They should know that those elected to positions of trust and government on all levels have their back. However, this is not the reality that they face here in New York. We now have an opportunity to put New York in a better direction where we are backing the blue and doing so unapologetically,” Zeldin said. “I am grateful for the DAI’s and the SOA’s endorsements today. When I am elected Governor, I will make sure that Albany has their backs.”
Public polling has shown New York voters have ranked crime and public safety as top concerns for them heading into the general election. Zeldin this year selected Alison Esposito, a retired NYPD officer, as his running mate.
“Throughout his career in the U.S. Congress and New York State Senate, Lee Zeldin has been an ally to law enforcement. He wants to pass a Law Enforcement Bill of Rights and other important measures," said Ricky Frassetti, the president of the Nassau County Police Superior Officers Association. "Lee Zeldin has the experience and commitment to make changes in Albany that will protect citizens, support police and give victims the justice they deserve."
