Three Democratic state senators on Wednesday endorsed progressive activist Ana Maria Archila for lieutenant governor in the three-candidate field for the party's nomination. 

The endorsements come a day after Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled her replacement for the under-indictment former lieutenant governor, Brian Benjamin. Hochul is turning to Rep. Antonio Delgado to fill the role in the office and run with her in November. 

But Delgado must first clear a Democratic primary, currently scheduled for June 28. 

Endorsing Archila on Wednesday were Deputy Senate Majority Leader Mike Gianaris, Senate Health Committee Chairman Gustavo Rivera and Sen. James Sanders. 

“New Yorkers are facing an affordability crisis and need real solutions, including truly affordable housing, better-paying jobs, and quality health care for all," Gianaris said. "Ana María is exactly the independent voice that working families need to make sure that state government is focused on their needs — not the interests of billionaires and big corporations."

Candidates for lieutenant governor run separately from the candidates for governor in the party primaries. The winners join together on a formal ticket in the general election.

Archila is running in an informal ticket with New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Willaims.

In addition to Delgado, Archila faces former New York City Councilwoman Diana Reyna for the nomination. Reyna is the preferred running mate of Rep. Tom Suozzi.
