The campaign of lieutenant governor candidate Ana María Archila on Friday is set to announce its initial endorsements from progressive elected officials and organizations.

Archila, an activist who founded the immigrant rights group Make the Road New York, is running alongside gubernatorial New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams in an informal ticket.

Her campaign will be endorsed on Friday by three members of the New York City Council: Alexa Aviles, Tiffany Cabán and Sandy Nurse. She will also be endorsed by the New York Progressive Action Network and CUFFH Action.

“Ana María Archila is the clear progressive choice in this race,” Cabán said. “For two decades, she has been on the front lines of the fight for immigrant and LGBTQ+ justice, women’s rights, and a better life for workers and tenants. Now she’s injecting those same values and fight into this inspiring campaign for Lieutenant Governor, and I’m all in to support her.”

Archila has the backing of the Working Families Party in her bid for lieutenant governor this year. Democratic incumbent Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin is seeking a full term alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul, while Rep Tom Suozzi is seeking the gubernatorial nomination as well with former Councilwoman Diana Reyna.

Archila's campaign is focusing on issues close to progressive advocates and lawmakers including the approval of a measure meant to make it harder for tenants to be evicted and landlords to increase rent, as well as replenishing a fund meant to help workers not included in federal pandemic relief and the approval of a single-payer health care system in New York.

“NYPAN is proud to endorse Ana María Archila for Lieutenant Governor,” said George Albro of the New York Progressive Action Network. “When it comes to delivering real change that will improve people’s lives, she’s the clear choice in this race. She is deeply committed to raising taxes on the billionaires who’ve made huge sums in the pandemic to fund vital services, passing Good Cause eviction legislation to protect tenants, and turning the New York Health Act into law to ensure everyone has access to health coverage and care.”
