Gov. Kathy Hochul's campaign for a full term was endorsed Monday by former Rep. Charlie Rangel, an influential figure in New York City politics, as she prepares for a Democratic primary next year.
“Congressman Charles Rangel is a larger than life figure whose tenacious advocacy and extraordinary career of public service have benefitted New York State for generations,” Hochul said. “From leading anti-apartheid sanctions to shaping the Affordable Care Act, I deeply admire Congressman Rangel’s unwavering commitment to advancing justice and equity in every community. I am humbled and honored to earn his strong endorsement.”
Rangel had been a prominent supporter of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo prior to his resignation last August amid allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct.
Hochul is being challenged in the Democratic primary by Rep. Tom Suozzi and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. She may also face New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is openly considering a run for governor.
