Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone's campaign on Thursday reported raising $1.1 million and has more than $1 million in cash on hand amid talk of a potential run for statewide office in 2022.
Bellone was first elected Suffolk County executive in 2011 and is currently in his final term. But his fundraising is continuing, according to a source, in order to have the resources available to be a statewide contender next year if the opportunity presents itself.
Bellone is a Democrat who has successfully won re-election in an area of downstate New York that has seen more Republican successes than other suburban New York City counties like Nassau and Westchester. Donald Trump won carried the county in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
His campaign is also working with high-dollar Democratic fundraiser Annie Weir, who has worked with the campaigns of Hillary Clinton, former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Sen. Michael Gianaris and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney.
Bellone's campaign reported receiving a maximum contribution of $50,000 from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bellone's campaign also made a $20,000 contribution to Democrat Alvin Bragg, who is in line to become the first Black man to serve as the Manhattan district attorney.
