The independent expenditure committee backed by the New York League of Conservation Voters this election cycle has been supporting two incumbent Democrats and two challengers in battleground races in the state.
The group is releasing digital ads and sending mail to tout the support -- or in the case of incumbent Republicans their opposition -- to a measure designed to shift the state to renewable energy in the coming decades in order to combat climate change.
The campaign is backing the re-elections of Sens. Peter Harckham and Monica Martinez, two suburban Democrats facing competitive challenges this fall. And the group is supporting the candidacies of Democrats Michelle Hinchey and Karen Smythe in the Hudson Valley.
The pitch to voters in the ads: counteracting climate change can be good for the economy and lead to the creation of union jobs.
"When the COVID-19 crisis ends, we must fuel our economic recovery by combatting climate change," one ad says.
Democrats in the state Senate are defending their two-year-old majority after gaining control of the chamber for the first time in a decade in 2018.
