Millions of people will cast votes this year in the presidential election and, in some states, many already have done so. But Hillary Clinton wants New Yorkers to also move their pen further down the ballot and have a voice in state and local offices as well.
Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee and former secretary of state, appeared in a video this week urging voters to cast down-ballot votes this year.
“No matter what issue you care about, it’s on the ballot,” she said in the video. “We should be voting like our lives and our rights depend on it, because you know what? They do. Make a plan to vote all the way up and all the way down the ballot.”
The video was released by Eleanor's Legacy Action Fund, an affiliated group of Eleanor's Legacy. The organization recruits, trains and funds self-identifying women who support abortion and reproductive rights for state and local office in New York.
“When we all vote, we all win. It’s that simple,” said Eleanor’s Legacy Action Fund President Brette McSweeney.
“This is the most consequential election of a lifetime. And New York State has a less than stellar history of voter turnout, coming in at 41st in the nation in 2016. We have to cut through the noise and the disinformation. The Action Fund is working to ensure that every New York voter has the complete and accurate information to know that their vote matters and that they have many options on where, how, and when to vote this year.”
The group this year also plans a phone banking, texting and social media campaign to contact more than 400,000 voters in New York. Early voting begins on Saturday.
