Republican Representative John Katko and Democratic challenger Dana Balter are in a close race for the battleground 24th Congressional District in Central New York, a Siena College/Syracuse.com poll released on Sunday found.

The poll shows Balter drawing 45 percent of the vote to Katko's 42 percent. If Working Families Party candidate Steven Williams remains on the ballot in November, pending the outcome of a legal challenge, Balter receives 42 percent of support, Katko 40 percent, and Williams 6 percent.

The margin of error in the poll is 5.1 percent.

The poll also showed former Vice President Joe Biden holding a wide lead among voters in the district over President Donald Trump, 53 percent to 34 percent. Hillary Clinton carried the district in 2016 over Trump by 4 percentage points.

The district is a longtime battleground seat in upstate New York. Katko has held the seat for three terms, after his first election in 2014.

Most voters surveyed, 80 percent, said they are locked in on their choice. Only 1 percent said they will change their mind.

The poll of 414 likely voters was conducted between September 27 and September 29.
